JIACCO Pakistan Sets a New Standard in Thermal Integrity at 1180MW Bhikki CCPP
In the world of high-capacity power generation, the difference between peak performance and a mechanical breakdown often comes down to the microscopic structure of the metal itself.
Recently, JIACCO Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd.—a premier provider of NDT and engineering services—successfully completed a critical Heat Treatment mission at the 1180MW Bhikki Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) during its Operation & Maintenance (O&M) phase.
The Mission: Strengthening the Backbone of Punjab’s Power
The Bhikki CCPP, powered by GE’s H-Class 9HA gas turbines, operates at extreme temperatures and pressures. Over time, maintenance activities—especially welding—can introduce internal stresses into the plant’s high-pressure piping and turbine components.
JIACCO’s specialized team was tasked with neutralizing these risks through precision thermal processing.
Key Services Delivered
- Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT): Essential for relieving residual stresses in welded joints, ensuring the metal regains its original ductility and strength.
- Pre-Heating Services: Conducted prior to welding to prevent thermal cracking and ensure a uniform metallurgical bond.
- On-Site Stress Relieving: Utilizing portable, high-precision heating units to treat critical components without the need for dismantling or off-site transport.
Why Heat Treatment is Vital for O&M
Heat treatment isn’t just a maintenance “extra”—it is a safety necessity. In a facility as large as Bhikki, untreated stress in the metal can lead to:
- Stress Corrosion Cracking: Where environmental factors and internal tension cause sudden failure.
- Brittle Fracture: Losing the ability to withstand the rapid pressure changes common in gas turbine operations.
- Reduced Component Life: Shortening the intervals between expensive parts replacements.
Precision Meets Performance
By applying JIACCO’s decades of expertise in heat treatment, the Bhikki O&M team was able to ensure that the plant continues to run at its record-breaking 61.59% efficiency with maximum safety. Our technical team utilized calibrated thermal sensors and automated control systems to maintain the exact “soak times” and cooling rates required by international codes like ASME and API.
